Li Jiachao emphasized that Hong Kong attaches importance to trade and investment relations with the EU.
Lee Ka Chiu John, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) posted on social platforms today (17th) that last week he hosted a luncheon for Thomas Gnocchi, director of the European Union Office in Hong Kong and Macau, and consuls-general and representatives of 13 EU countries. At the meeting, he shared with all the guests the views of the Hong Kong SAR Government on some major economic and political issues.
Li Jiachao pointed out that the EU has always been a very important trading partner of Hong Kong. The 27 EU member states are Hong Kong’s third largest trading partner in commodity trade. In 2022, the bilateral merchandise trade volume between Hong Kong and the EU reached HK$ 524 billion, and 1,600 EU companies were located in Hong Kong.

Lee Ka Chiu John went on to point out that Hong Kong is a bridge connecting eastern and western cultures and provides endless opportunities for all countries. Hong Kong has a good business environment, low tax system, free capital flow, rich multicultural talents and international professional services. These advantages have helped European Union and foreign enterprises to flourish in Hong Kong, enter the vast markets in mainland China and Asia, and do business in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He stressed that Hong Kong attaches great importance to its trade and investment relations with the EU, and will strengthen ties with the EU offices in Hong Kong and Macao and the Consul General in all aspects.
Lee Ka Chiu John also visited the Hong Kong International Cuisine Institute today (17th) to learn about the latest development of local professional training courses in Hong Kong and the new trend of the global catering industry, and to listen to the views and suggestions of the Institute and the trainees on enrollment training and employment development respectively. During this period, Lee Ka Chiu John said that the Hong Kong SAR Government will continue to attract more young people to join the apprenticeship training in the future. As the saying goes, "being the best in one’s profession", anyone can make a difference in different industries with enthusiasm and hard work. Hong Kong is a diversified international city, and people with different specialties are needed to display their strengths in various industries to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness, vitality and charm! Li Jiachao pointed out that Hong Kong’s food culture is world-famous, and he often sees Hong Kong-style cuisine when he visits various places. As Asia’s capital of fine wines and delicacies, Hong Kong’s unique cooking culture should be passed down so that visitors from all over the world can savor the "Hong Kong flavor".

Liang Xi: There must be targeted deployment for different passenger groups.
Mainland tourists are back in Hong Kong, and the market is booming, but some local businesses still point out that business is not as good as before the epidemic. Liang Xi, a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, today (17th) posted a message on the social platform about the current situation of Hong Kong’s tourism industry, pointing out that the tourism preferences of mainland tourists have undergone structural changes, and it is necessary for Hong Kong’s tourism industry to make different arrangements for different groups of tourists with high, medium and low production.

Liang Xi described that Hong Kong is "too rich for mainland tourists, and the middle class is too low cost-effective". In addition, the exchange rate of the Hong Kong dollar with the US dollar is at a disadvantage, which makes mainland tourists unattractive to shop in Hong Kong. Regarding the shortage of manpower in the local service industry, Liang Xi mentioned that the "post-90 s" and "post-00 s", which are the main consumers in the Mainland, are deeply influenced by online celebrity culture, and most mainland merchants are proud of online celebrity’s presence, and they are hospitable to them for positive publicity opportunities; However, local food shops are extremely unfriendly to mainland bloggers and online celebrity. They think that online celebrity has dominated Zhang Biao and set up video cameras to "stop eating", which makes them indifferent, impolite and even shut out. As a result, it is not only difficult to get publicity, but even in turn it is publicly criticized.
Liang Xi pointed out that different arrangements should be made for different groups with high, medium and low production. For high-consumption groups, many top-level activities in Hong Kong are still quite attractive, including private yacht cruise activities and high-end box horse racing activities. For family customers, it is necessary to improve the cost performance ratio. For example, tickets for Hong Kong attractions such as Disney, Ocean Park and Palace Museum are sold in packages with mainland Greater Bay Area attractions, so that tourists outside Guangdong can save money and visit the Bay Area in one breath, and drive them to Hong Kong. He also suggested that Hong Kong should increase the design of special attractions, such as TVB Guzhuang Street, which is familiar to mainland tourists.

It is worth noting that in the past few days, the Hong Kong police cracked down on illegal acts such as overcharging taxi drivers and "white-brand cars" in Lantau Disneyland. Yesterday (16th), two more taxi drivers were arrested.
Police officers in disguise boarded a private car without a taxi license outside Disneyland yesterday afternoon. The 43-year-old driver received the fare after arriving at his destination in Sha Tin, and was arrested by the police on suspicion of "illegally using the car for rental or passenger reward" and "driving without third-party insurance".
At about 10 pm on the same day, law enforcement officers disguised as mainland tourists were picked up by a 69-year-old taxi driver and picked up at a hotel in Sha Tin at a higher fare than normal. In the process, the driver did not start the meter to collect fees by the meter, nor did he show his taxi driver’s ID card, and was arrested by the police on charges of "soliciting passengers", "overcharging fares" and "not showing his taxi driver’s ID card". The taxi has been towed to Tai Lam Chung Vehicle Detention Centre for further inspection.
Hong Kong Customs launched "Sniper" anti-drug operation to crack down on online shopping drug trafficking cases.
The Customs and Excise Department held a press briefing today (17 August) by the Narcotics Bureau of the Customs. At the briefing, the media were briefed on the achievements of the "sniper" anti-drug operation of the Customs and Excise Department. From June 12th to August 11th this year, the Customs and Excise Department launched an anti-drug operation codenamed "Sniper" for two consecutive months. A total of 23 drug trafficking cases were detected, two men were arrested and about 68 kilograms of drugs were seized, with a total value of about 24 million yuan.
Chen Mengdi, commander of the Airport Investigation Team of the Drug Investigation Bureau of Hong Kong Customs, said that online shopping is popular now. After ordering goods, citizens will transport them to the overseas warehouses of the container transportation company. When the container transportation company contracts a certain amount of goods, they will transport the goods to the warehouses in Hong Kong for unpacking, and inform the recipients to pick them up at the pick-up point or smart cabinet, or arrange for them to be delivered to the designated places according to the customer’s requirements.

After risk assessment and intelligence analysis, it raided a number of container companies, inspected suspicious packages and successfully seized drugs. In the operation, officers cracked 23 cases of eucalyptus trafficking, seized 68 kilograms of drugs with a market value of 24 million yuan, and arrested two men aged 17 and 64 respectively.

The parcels involved were mainly from Europe and America, and the parcels contained drugs ranging from 1 kg to 9 kg respectively. Drug trafficking syndicates will hide drugs in air fresheners, cat crawlers, shampoo bottles, industrial appliances, interlayers of packaging materials, snacks or clothes under the cover of daily necessities.
